“When The Lights Are Out” is the third single from the forthcoming album “Roots”, composed by jazz vocalist Miriam Kibakaya. The music is inspired by the modern American jazz tradition and the sound of the Nordic jazz scene, and has a lurking and mystical atmosphere. The piece is based on collectively played melodies and solo-improvisations that contrast against a groovy, syncopated riff in 5/4. Recorded by Jo Ranheim in Øra Studio in 2022, mixed by Kyrre Laastad, mastered by Karl Klaseie, and released by Jazzland Recordings.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
